UNITY — Back to school means a quick return to school sports, with volleyball being one of those extracurricular offerings for students.
“Tryouts took place for senior girls and two teams are playing for the Warriors again this season,” senior girls’ coach, Vicki Orobko, says.
“I will coach the A team and we are thrilled to have Shanna Magnus coaching the B team once again.”
Ken Parker will once again lead the senior boys’ volleyball team.
Sept. 8-9, both UCHS senior boys and girls participated in McLurg’s Mega Volley event with the boys finishing fourth while the girls’ team earned bronze in a 10-team tournament.
UCHS prides itself on having senior students who coach younger teams with Jacelyn Delhommeau, Jorja Gumpinger and Camara Brown all stepping into these leadership roles.
Coach Orobko continues to lead students in building relationships, holding another “Tourney for Truth and Reconciliation” Sept. 22-23. Ceremonies, activities and awareness will be included in the 12-team tournament featuring reams from La Loche, Maple Creek and Fort Qu’Appelle, in addition to many local teams.
The UCHS senior girls’ Warriors A team includes four Grade 12 girls, while the senior B team will include six, all looking to make the most of their senior year in high school.
UCHS school goals are building on the basics and elevating excellence.
“School sports provide a perfect opportunity to manifest these goals. Of course, we always want to instil joy, belonging and fostering leadership,” says Orobko.
While there are no Grade 12 players on the senior boys’ team, they are looking forward to playing host to the senior boys’ home tournament Sept. 20 as well as playing host to 3A provincial championships Nov. 24-25.
Jeff Nemish has come on board as a community coach with the junior boys’ team. UCHS is has three junior girls’ teams and two junior boy’s teams, making for over 90 students participating in UCHS Warrior volleyball. Cally Kowalchuk will be returning as a coach for one of the junior girls’ teams.
“We are thankful to our senior athletes for wanting to help out with our junior teams,” UCHS vice-principal and senior boys’ volleyball coach, Ken Parker, adds.
“In addition to Jacelyn, Jorja and Camara, we have Avyne McLean, Ethan Stifter and Zayden Wagner. While the teams they are working with is still being sorted out, they will be helping develop our younger Warriors.”
Parker also adds that the cross-country team is training and attending meets. Sept. 14 the team travels to Biggar, Sept 21 to Wilkie and Sept 28 is the Unity meet at the golf course. The district meet is Oct. 5 at Little Loon Lake. The football team has been training and already has one win. We are looking forward to the fall season of sports with a full slate of teams.”
