The communities of Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie will have plenty to cheer about March 18, 19 and 20 as several sports playoffs will be taking place.
U OF S HUSKIES
Former Wilkie resident, and U of S Huskies track athlete, Trey Pernitsky, will be part of the Huskies team competing at Can-West USports championship in Winnipeg March 18-19. Pernitsky has had a number of success stories during his university athletic career. Competing in the 3000 metre, Pernitsky is ranked well and looking to earn a spot on the podium. He is also part of the 4 x 800M relay team.
WRESTLING
McLurg and Unity wrestlers will be part of Sask. High School Athletics provincial championship March 18-19. Coached by Chris Kent from McLurg High School in Wilkie, 11 students will be competing for provincial medals. The McLurg wrestling program has a long history of success on the mats and Broncs fans are cheering on their students for some more golden moments.
BASKETBALL
After wins were earned at SHSAA conference championships March 11-23, basketball teams from Macklin, Unity and Wilkie are all vying for regional titles March 18-19 that could earn them berths at upcoming provincial Hoopla championships being held March 25-26. Unity and Wilkie seedings earned them the right to host regional competition events. UCHS gym will be busy as it will include both the boys' and girls' divisions.
HOCKEY
There is so much hockey excitement in the communities of Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie.Teams are finally competing at higher levels after a two-year pandemic hiatus and the number of teams playing this deep into provincial and league playoffs is unprecedented.
The West Central Wheat Kings have become a super story coming off a season of highs and lows. This highly motivated and highly disciplined team has won their way through two top seeds to earn a spot in the north division final for the Centre Four Hockey League. The best-of-five series begins on the road March 20 at the Rod Hamm arena as the team takes on the Saskatoon Ice Hawks.
The Sask. West Hockey League final features the Wilkie Outlaws and the Macklin Mohawks. The SaskCan arena will be rocking for game two of the series March 18 with Wilkie down one game to the Hawks.
Macklin continues to dominate the playoff season with multiple teams still competing in both provincial and league championships. The U18 Mohawks are playing Redvers in the provincial final. The U15 Mohawks, who recently beat the Wilkie-Biggar team in league semifinals will now face the Unity Lazers in the Highway 14 League final. The same U15 Hawks are also vying for a provincial title playing Lafleche/Wood River, with the first game on March. 20. The U13 Mohawks will play the league final against the National Outlaws (Wilkie-Biggar combined team) with game one on March 20. The team is also in the provincial final playing Rouleau.
Kerrobert Tigers U18 team are the lone minor hockey team left in the playoff hunt and will play Kindersley for the league title with first game March 19.
Unity U15 Lazers are also in league playoffs and will take on Macklin for the league final. Games will be March 23 in Unity with game two back in Macklin March 29.
