SUMA golf cart resolution presents some concerns for Kerrobert, says mayor

Kerrobert' mayor Wayne Mock can see both concerns and benefits with proposed golf cart resolution brought up at SUMA.

KERROBERT — The town of Kerrobert is shaping up to have a busy end to the month of May.

Town crews have already completed the first street sweeping and have been busy getting the swimming pool ready for another great year of fun in the sun.

We are hopeful they can start tackling some potholes that are in desperate need of filling. A few events will close out the month such as the town-wide garage sale set to take place on May 27.

May 27 is Minor Ball Day, and May 28 is the Beef Project Achievement Day for the Multiple 4-H Club.

Spring cleanup has been going on since the start of May, with grass cutting and tree and hedge trimming. The town had posted a few dates on which they would pick up all the yard waste, provided that the clippings were put into clear plastic garbage bags. The reason for this is that some people tried to take advantage of the extra pickup and were throwing away their household garbage, so the switch to clear bags was made so that only yard clippings were being picked up.

Town council has put forward the grass watering schedule, which is odd-numbered houses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Even-numbered houses on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Watering can be done from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No watering is to be done on Sundays. Sunday watering will result in a fine.

At the SUMA Convention last month, there was a motion put forward to the province that golf carts could be allowed to operate within town limits under the rules and regulations of SGI. The provincial government is looking at this; we should have full details soon. I do have some concerns about safety with a main highway running through town. People crossing the highway will be in danger, as there are many big trucks coming through town with some going faster than the posted limits. It isn’t something that I would stand in the way of because I do see some benefits. One benefit is that running errands with a golf cart is much cheaper than operating a full-sized vehicle.
