UNITY, WILKIE — Senior boys’ volleyball all comes down to this, a berth at Sask. High School Athletics Association provincial volleyball championships Nov. 25-26.
McLurg Broncs captured their 2A conference and moved on to regional playdowns in Hepburn. The Wilkie team again showcased their dominance by winning their region, undefeated. The Broncs will compete at their provincial event in Regina – Harvest City is the host and Laval is the second gym.
Wilkie is defending provincial champions from 2021.
Unity Composite High School boys did not have a conference playoff to compete in as there were not enough 3A boys’ teams to warrant. UCHS Warriors advanced straight to regional playdowns in Outlook Nov. 18 and 19 and won their way to the regional championship.
Coach Ken Parker says, “Both Assiniboia and Unity felt this was going to be the final and waited patiently throughout the round robin and semifinals. The regional final was one of the most exciting games we had in our season so far. Assiniboia was at provincial playoffs last year in Unity and nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament, taking Saskatoon to three games in the quarter final. They have worked very hard to have a contending team to showcase well on their home court.
“Unity is ready to have an entire tournament of these games. We are defensive and entertaining to watch, and we love being part of tough games like we had against Assiniboia. I look forward to the drive down south.”
Senior girls’ 3A provincial championships took place in Macklin Nov. 18 and 19 with both UCHS and Macklin competing. While both teams won their way to opening playoff rounds, neither team was able to advance to medal rounds, thus ending their season.
