Provincial hockey playoffs: local teams making headway

It's the time of year for teams that the statement goes "win and you're in" or lose and go home as provincial playoffs are in full swing for area hockey teams

UNITY — Provincial bracket playoffs are well underway and some teams are out while others are on to the next round. Here are the details for teams in the Press-Herald reading area.

The U13 Unity Lazers put up a valiant effort, pushing Meadow Lake to the third and deciding game, but lost that one 1-0 so their provincial quest is over.

The U13 Luseland Mallards also saw their provincial playoffs come to an early end, losing their first round games to a strong team from Maidstone.

In the U15 D category, Maidstone and Macklin had an exciting first game battle in Macklin, Feb. 6, ending the game in a 5-5 tie. Meeting again in Maidstone, Feb. 11, the Mohawks came up with a 7-4 win to move on to the next round, in which they will play their familiar rivals from Kerrobert.

Kerrobert moved on by beating Lashburn in two straight games. The winner of the Kerrobert-Macklin matchup will then play either Clavet or Delisle for the northern U15 D championship.

In the B category for U15s, Unity lost their first game to Meadow Lake, and were to play their second game Feb. 16 with results unavailable for press deadlines.

A combined Wilkie/Biggar team also plays in U15 B, and the Outlaw/Nationals were leading their series against La Ronge, with the second game to be played Feb. 18 in Biggar.

Macklin moved through their first round against Paradise Hill in U18 D hockey, and are waiting to see if they will play Clavet or Lashburn for the northern title.

In U18 B, a combined Wilkie/Biggar team lost their first game to Meadow Lake and are hoping to turn things around when they head to Flying Dust First Nation to play again on Feb.18.

Kerrobert, meanwhile, also in U18 B, won their first round games against Hillmond and went on to win their first game, 5-1, against Kindersley in round two. The second game, played in Kindersley Feb. 13, resulted in a 4-4 tie so Kerrobert has advanced and will play either Meadow Lake or the combined Biggar/Wilkie team next.

Local girls are playing U13 female hockey but their provincial games have not started yet.
