Pool problems plague Wilkie's aged recreation venue

Wilkie residents thankful for ongoing pool fundraisers in light of old pool incurring difficulties challenging their 2023 swim season

WILKIE -- The biggest thing that I think is on everybody’s mind is the Wilkie Community Swimming Pool. Whether it be the delayed start up or the unheated water, our team has been focused on getting the pool up and running. I would like to thank all of you for bearing with us while we navigate these waters as well as Dave Glackin and TNT Plumbing and Heating for lending us their expertise. We will hopefully be back to normal by the time this is published. I look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s water show that will take place on August 22, at the end of the season.

It is worth briefly mentioning that between the June 17th parade and concert as well as this year’s swimathon, roughly $23,000 was raised for our new pool. Special mention should be made in appreciation of everyone who attended as well as our staff who worked hard to pull everything together.

Without any snow to cover the cracks and bumps in our roads it is now the time that our public works team is out patching. You may have noticed an improvement already in some of the high traffic areas. Again, I ask that everyone give our team the space they need to work safely. They are also being kept busy at the lift station, diagnosing and repairing some issues with the underground lines. Our Public Works team was out replacing the graduation banners with R.E.N.E.W.’s new banners. Congratulations and a round of applause to our 2023 graduates, the adventure has only just begun, we all look forward to seeing what you will achieve, and to R.E.N.E.W. for all the work they do for our town.

With the good comes the bad. There have been cases of vandalism and mischief this summer and last. Instances of spray painting and tagging have been seen around town which has benefited no one and only costs the town the effort to cover or remove the marks. In July, a town owned vehicle had some items pilfered from it and some gas siphoned. Among the stash was also a handful of town street signs including Stop and 4-Way signs. As if that wasn’t enough, a porta potty at the high school was set ablaze and was left as a pile of melted plastic. These actions, I know, do not reflect the spirit of Wilkie.
