Playoff season heats up as minor hockey season winds down

Minor hockey teams in Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie continue to vie for a championship

UNITY ‑ With just a couple weeks left in hockey season, teams in the communities of Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie continue to remain in their respective playoff hunts.

Provincial play:

In Unity, the U15 Lazers were the last UMH team in provincial playoffs and they definitely wowed the crowds, with their determination and grit getting them through several series before heading to the provincial northern final against Nipawin. The north final series came down to the last game and with every ounce of effort the team could put in, they kept the game close throughout three periods however lost the deciding game by a score of 6-5, thus ending their provincial hopes.

Macklin still has three teams in provincial playoffs and all are in their respective provincial finals after winning their way through their provincial brackets, including the north final, to capture their spot in the final that could earn them the provincial title.

The U18 Mohawks won over Lashburn, Kerrobert, Meunster and will now face off against Redvers for the provincial championship

The U15 Mohawks defeated Aberdeen, Naicam and Lashburn and will now face Lafleche in their provincial final. Game one takes place in Macklin on March 20.

The U13 Macklin Mohawks defeated Neilburg, Meunster and Raymore and will now face off against Rouleau for the provincial title. Game one is on the road March 19 with game two set in Macklin for March 26.

Having three teams all in a provincial final from one community is an amazing feat and fans are ready to cheer their teams on to provincial title.

League playoffs

The communities of Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie have teams still in league playoffs in the Highway 14 hockey league.

In Unity, the U9 and U11 divisions held their league playoffs in tournament style March 12 weekend. The U9 Unity Lazers captured their league title in Biggar, and in the U11 division, with Unity white and Unity black teams facing off in their B side league championship, taking home silver and gold respectively, on home ice in Unity.

Left in league playoffs are the U13 on the consolation side and the U15 team are in the league semifinals playing Eston.

In Macklin, what is known so far, Macklin U13 Mohawks are in league finals with opponents and dates to be determined. Macklin U15 Mohawks are in game two of league semifinals against the National Outlaws (Wilkie/Biggar).

In Wilkie, in addition to the U15 team playing Macklin in semifinals, the U13 Outlaws are playing Outlook in semifinals. The team won game one on March 13 in Wilkie 6-3.

Kerrobert minor hockey says the sole team left in league playoffs are the U18s, who start round two March. 17.  

Because schedules are being updated often it is best to check out the Highway 14 League website for the latest information on which teams are playing when and where.

The Luseland memorial arena closes for the season March 16.
