Opting out: 50 years of visionary service comes to an end

Although their future looks a little fuzzy, Dr. Brad and Brenda Thomas will miss seeing their optical clients after 50 years of business.

UNITY – With their sights set on taking it easy, Dr. Brad Thomas and wife, Brenda, of B & B Optical have announced their retirement at the end of 2024.

The couple originally grew up in Ontario and had met through Brenda’s sister and brother-in-law in 1970, while Brad was studying optometry at Waterloo University. While attending university, Brad came to Unity with a friend of his, Lee Miller, to work for the summer.

“I really liked it here. The people were friendly, and I thought this would be a good place to live,” said the doctor.

In 1974, the Thomas’ made the move across the country to Unity, where Brad started working with Dr. Donald. A. McKillop. When McKillop decided to retire, Brad was offered the practice, and with Brenda by his side, B & B Optical was in business.

Over the course of the past 50 years, Brad said there have been some minor struggles and many changes in the world of optometry.

“Technology has been the biggest change. The equipment is more digital, more laser surgeries are being carried out and more drug rights. But, if you like what you are doing, the day goes by quickly,” said Brad.

As their last working day quickly approaches, the couple said they will miss working with their clients, however there are some things they will not miss.

“I am pretty sure Brad will not miss getting up in the morning and I will not miss having to come to work on the cold winter days,” said Brenda.

The couple is looking forward to their future, although their plans have not yet been set in stone.

“We want to spend more time at the lake, visiting grandkids, travelling, and Brad is looking forward to fishing more,” laughed Brenda. She also added they don’t know where they will remain in Unity at this time as they just want to enjoy their downtime for the foreseeable future.

The last official business day for B & B Optical will be Dec. 31, then Dr. James Lawrence will be opening Round Valley Eye Care. The Thomases said there will be some renovations to the space before Dr. Lawrence begins his practice.
