UNITY ‑ It has been 26 years since Unity arena has seen ice extended into April, when the Unity Miners hosted the Allan Cup. Once the arena is done for the season, Unity Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Headrick, says her team has plenty on tap for spring, preparing for summer.
Ball season and spring park clean up will be the next area of attention for the parks department. Headrick says parks and green spaces will be attended to with annual spring clean-up.
There are many plans for the regional ball park. The parks team is rebuilding three sets of bleachers at the Kinsmen Diamond. Unity Minor Ball is partnering with the town of Unity in a diamond rebuilding project, and the Elks diamond will be getting a facelift.
Headrick also says there are a few final touches and some small deficiencies that need to be completed at the Unity Community Centre as part of the 2021-22 exterior and interior renovation project.
The Richardson Outdoor rink is now closed for the season.
Now that the weather is warmer, swimmers are getting excited for another season at the Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre. Residents can expect online swimming lesson registration information in May. Headrick says almost the entire lifeguard team is returning.
Baseball, softball and soccer have held their registrations and players and fans are excited to get back to these activities. Once the diamonds and fields dry up, people will soon see players back in action.
