Mayor Sharon Del Frari reports many compliments on the Town of Unity from visitors and travellers.

Fall is here! The community has enjoyed the many ball games played throughout the summer. It’s a huge milestone for the Cardinals diamond. With many dedicated volunteers and donors to the project, next year will bring a new playing field. It will be another gem for our ballpark. Congratulations to all the coaches and players who brought excitement to each game! We look forward to next season.

The Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre was very busy and much appreciated throughout the hot days of summer. Thanks to our crew of lifeguards who are currently winding up the season. During Drowning Prevention Week, the crew hosted an informative barbecue with proceeds going to the family of a young man who tragically lost his life at the lake this summer. The swimming pool takes a lot of maintenance and dedicated upkeep from staff. As with everything, we are always learning and will continue to do so to provide the absolute best service possible to the community.

Upkeep and improvements to the walking paths are a great testament to the commitment and dedication of staff and community. I would like to include all the community when I say this. Love and respect for the community shows wherever you look in our town. We receive many compliments from people passing through or visiting. We all do our part in the way our community is perceived. It’s up to the council to ensure the dedication and work isn’t just skin deep. We are to give direction for the maintenance and improvements to our infrastructure to give our community a base for generations to come. It’s important to look below the surface as well.

In November, you will go to the polls to elect your council for the next four years. We still hope to schedule a community meeting before election time to answer any questions you may have about the current council. I know there are often questions and if we’re all in the same room, it’s sometimes easier to get answers. Council is a commitment to all taxpayers, not just those who speak the loudest (though we do hear you). It’s a very important commitment as you will be giving direction that impacts on the future of our current and future taxpayers. We are not here to tell staff how to do their jobs. We hire the CAO and they direct staff to carry forward in the direction the council has set.  I feel there have been great strides in the staffing area over our term. I look forward to seeing those in place carrying out their duties in the future. We all learn and grow, as we should. Staff have also been updating our bylaws and policies. With our current staff it appears we may even be able to tackle Asset Management. This is another huge step forward and will help with effective planning for the future.

Enjoy the busy harvest season with our farming community. Remember to keep an eye out for slow-moving equipment that may be in town for tires or parts from our businesses.

Also, school starts this week. The buses will be on the streets along with children and their parents biking and walking to school, be careful and keep everyone safe. Speaking personally, I’ve really enjoyed my time spent with students at Unity Public School and St. Peter’s School. The questions from your students are very refreshing and we wish teachers and students a good term!
