UNITY - There was a definite sense of relief when following the Sask. West Hockey League meeting in late September, president Joe Cey announced the details for the upcoming SWHL season, along with the schedule being released in early October.
Brad Murphy of the Kerrobert Tigers says, “Kerrobert Tigers are ready to ice a team in 2021. The Tigers are excited to be back after having last year off. We do have an influx of younger guys trying out for the team this year. Our coaching status remains up in the air as one guy is going to be on the bench for a start. We are still trying to fill some holes and add to our Tigers crew over the next month.”
Murphy also says their organization ishoping for a normal year of hockey with great fan support as regulations are allowing people in the rink for the season.
Ryan Cey of the Wilkie Outlaws tells the Press-Herald, “The Outlaws are ready to get back to the rink and start the season. The team will look a little different as a few longtime Outlaws have decided to retire, which include: captain Mike Sittler, assistant captain Rick Cey and Lorne Griffiths. We have added young local talent Kaleb Cey to the roster, as well as former North Star Logan Nachtegaele. Outlaws will start skating in the next couple weeks to prepare for the season opener Nov. 13.”
Asked about the upcoming season, the Unity Miners responded to the Press-Herald saying, “Not much to tell you yet other than the season starts Nov. 12. Mandatory double vax for the league. Coaching status and player status is still being determined. We are looking for new executive members and volunteers. Our Fun Day of Golf was a success with 95 golfers.”
Macklin Mowhawks responded, “It’s the same team as last year including the same coach as last year, nothing changing.”
In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Luseland Mallards say, “Due to many reasons, including player and executive numbers, the Luseland Mallards have been granted a one-year leave of absence from the SWHL. This decision was not made lightly and was not an easy one to make.”
Unity will play their season opener on the road against Macklin. Kerrobert will open their season against Wilkie on Nov. 13 while Unity will host Edam also on Nov. 13.
