Little Seedlings Daycare centre starting to sprout in Wilkie

Board of directors purchase four lots and a building has been moved into town, waiting for basement and foundation work.

WILKIE – Little Seedlings Daycare in Wilkie has been working hard over the winter months to bring a facility to the community. Members of the board have been creating fundraisers and collecting donations, which has helped in securing some of the big-ticket items.

The board has purchased four lots at 504 - Main St. Jessica Ens, vice-chairman of the board of directors, said this location is ideal as it is within walking distance of the two schools, Memorial Park and the location of the new swimming pool.

Another big expense for the daycare was the new building that was delivered March 26. Currently, the basement is being dug and foundation work has already been tendered, accepted and should begin in the next couple of weeks.

“Once the building is moved from its blocking and onto the new foundation, we have several hurdles to overcome, including approval of the layout, renovations to the building and fundraising to cover future costs,” said Enns.

She says the board is pleased with how much has been accomplished in such a short amount of time but knows there is still more to be done.

While the board is waiting for the proposed layout approval and code requirement renovations to happen, they are diligently working behind the scenes to ensure the daycare comes to fruition. A hiring process, policy and procedure manual, registration process and additional filings required to be a registered daycare are also being worked on.

“There have been many discussions on the registration process and hiring of staff but at this time no official decision has been made. However, we are interested in hearing from any applicants, and anyone interested in taking courses to pursue an early childhood education certification. Once the registration process is available, all information will be made accessible to the community and surrounding area,” added Enns.

Overall, the reaction to the daycare has been positive for the town of Wilkie.

“Majority of the community sees the benefit of providing reliable and affordable childcare services. It is our hope that the daycare will fill the high demands and provide flexible childcare to all that require it. The community also recognizes this new facility will offer many new opportunities for flexible employment,” said Enns.

Little Seedlings Daycare is always looking for volunteers to either help with fundraising or to help with special projects once the foundation and building are ready.

“We would love to hear from any members interested in contributing their time, as this project will require the involvement of the entire town,” added Enns.
