UNITY ‑ A Hollywood icon inspired the Betty White Challenge benefitting animal rescue organizations across the North America.
White, a legendary actress and comedian, died just days before her 100th birthday, which would have occurred Jan. 17. The challenge swept through social media in the days leading up to and including what would have been her 100th birthday.
KC Rescue cat rescue organization out of Unity, said they were thrilled with the response to this challenge and as of early Jan. 18, they had received more than $1,500 through online donations, as well as many more that were received in cash, through KC Rescue website and PayPal options.
CBC online noted Canadians donated thousands across Canada. White often had an animal in her hands while doing personal appearances and made it clear she was an animal supporter. The actress was renowned worldwide for her work and her fun personality.
While it doesn’t seem clear who started the challenge, it quickly blossomed, earning celebrity support and widespread attention across North America.
The challenge asked people to donate $5 or more to a local animal shelter or rescue in honour of White on what would have been her 100th birthday.
Animal shelters and rescue operations across the province, Canada and the United States reported on social media the success of this initiative with many adding comments of how honoured White would have been with these gestures.
KC Rescue was grateful for people participating, as they rely on donations to help with expenses in their non-profit organization. The endeavour eliminated a need to organize a fundraiser for the time being. A KC Rescue spokesperson tells the Press-Herald / SASKTODAY.ca, "It will go a long way to helping us house, feed and medically care for the cats. We’re still at capacity with cats on the waiting list so we are very appreciative for the financial support from this challenge."
