KERROBERT — Well, we finally and sadly say goodbye to summer and ready ourselves for fall. The harvest is once again in full swing and by the time this article hits the printers, I would think the harvest will be completed. Thank you to all of the hard-working men and women bringing in the harvest to help feed the world. All of your hard work is greatly appreciated.
This is a busy time of year as kids are back in school and the school sports immediately get into full swing. The year always starts with football and volleyball, and the teams have all been training hard and have begun playing games against other schools. We wish them all much success and hopefully a fun-filled experience.
The town crews have been finishing up some potholes fill-in work and getting the arena ready for another action-packed season of hockey. The ice will be in by the beginning of October, and aside from that some other work has been completed. The plexiglass was cleaned, some boards replaced and a ton of painting has been done throughout the facility to spruce it up for the season.
The Kerrobert and District Wildlife Federation put in a brand-new dock these past couple of weeks. It is another great addition to our already beautiful reservoir. I look forward to doing some relaxing fishing from the new dock soon. Great job once again by the wildlife crew and volunteers.
Sept. 20 was National Tree Day. Recreation Director Marli Sheppard organized a great day of tree planting at the fairgrounds. The event was registered through Tree Canada / Arbors Canada. The event had drawn in some help from the Grade 5 and 6 classes from our school, community members, town staff, Strathcona Resources, Country 104.9 FM, and several local businesses had some of their staff represent them. Rev Energy supplied an auger to drill holes for the new trees. The new trees consisted of five Treasured Red apple trees, five Romeo cherry trees, 40 poplar trees and 30 Colorado Spruce trees. A great event and hopefully something that can be repeated in the future. Thank you to all who participated and sponsored this event.
We had a request to town council at our last meeting to allow the 700 block of Manitoba Avenue to be closed for a block party. We thought it was a great idea and had no problem granting this request. Those who reside on the 700 block had a potluck supper and from what I hear, was a fantastic event spurred on by a couple guys in the neighbourhood, Darwin Rye and Dylan MacKinnon. Thumbs up to you for having the idea and helping pull it all together.
The Kerrobert Chamber of Commerce held a golf tournament Sept. 15. The event was a huge success as roughly 66 people came out to golf in teams of four. There was a supper to follow and drinks until the dawn’s early light. Well not quite, but from what I hear not far off. That is a sure sign of a great time. Thank you to the chamber and the golf course staff for bringing this all together.
The Town of Kerrobert will be having a Harvest Festival from Friday, Oct. 6 to Sunday, Oct. 8. Friday will consist of tours of the KCS school followed by two football games. The junior game will start at 5 p.m. versus Plenty, then the seniors will battle Macklin under the lights starting at 8 p.m. Come out for some barbecue and cheer on the teams. Saturday will kick off at 10 a.m. with the Chamber of Commerce parade, followed by fun at the Courthouse / Kerrobert Cultural Center and also at the poolside park. There will be pumpkin painting, bouncy castles, face painting, balloon man and glitter tattoos. There will be a petting zoo brought to you by Old Mcdale’s Farm. Saturday evening will wrap up with a hoedown at the Prairieland Community Center beginning at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 and kids 12 and under are free. The Gypsy Renegades are a band that play a mix of country, old country and rock music. Come out for some refreshments and dancing.
Sunday will begin with a pancake breakfast and continued activities. Check the town website, watch for posters or call our recreation office at 306-834-2344 for more details. It will certainly be a great time.
