LUSELAND - As summer turns into fall, the community of Luseland wanted to provide an opportunity for residents to celebrate the harvest and the incoming season’s change with a number of activities held on Sept. 11.
Some events were cancelled or toned down, or mandated masks to attend, in response to a rise in COVID-19 cases in the province to ensure the safety of organizers, hosts and participants. However, this didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm on event day.
The all day itinerary included something for all generations of people to enjoy.
The Luseland Museum played host to a number of activities throughout the day, which included an agricultural fair with entries accepted in multiple categories ranging from preserves to garden product to creativity entries for sewing and other projects. The Luseland Quilting Club also had on display their beautiful creations. Attendees could also head to the museum to see a display of prize cars and trucks as well as some classic tractors.
A unique bingo that involved chicken droppings was run by Brittany Cairns and her son Wes and proved entertaining if nothing else.
Other features of the day included a food truck on Main Street, a corn-hole game sponsored by the local Co-op, a gaming truck set up by the Luseland Library as well as Mayor Wurz supplying a karaoke machine that allowed local kids to perform and play music, much to the delight of people roaming the street where the majority of activity was being held.
Kids were also treated to the Smurf train providing rides up and down the street.
A beautiful fall backdrop was set up for a harvest photo booth courtesy of Bobbi Elliot wherein lots of people stopped for this free photo opportunity.
A beef supper was provided for those that purchased tickets with sales going to the Luseland Community Development committee to support local projects.
Following supper, the Luseland Arts Council lined up entertainers who performed by the arena on a portable stage which allowed a safe option for people to gather and enjoy some great talent outdoors.
West of the 3rd Graphics had scarecrow hat kits to purchase prior to the festival for people to decorate them up to display at the event or to wear for this festival. As well, the Luseland Development Committee encouraged residents to decorate their yard with scarecrows leading up to the event so as to have the whole town on board with the theme and help generate excitement for the day.
Daisy’s Corner Store gave away free pumpkin spice lattes throughout the day of the event and the Royal George Hotel hosted a pancake breakfast in the morning.
While the weather wasn’t particularly hot and sunny, it didn’t rain, which allowed for all events to go off unhindered by Mother Nature.
Judging from positive responses heard and posted on social media, people were appreciative of the opportunity to enjoy some sense of community safely and thoroughly enjoyed all of the options that were made available in this day long festival.
No rest for Luseland, though, as they are now gearing up to throw their full support for the Team Flahr MS Bike ride on Sept. 18 that involves a lunch and another opportunity to join for a worthy cause.
