UNITY ‑ It was a gorgeous fall day to enjoy a horse-related outing in the Unity area Oct. 16.
Pat and Margaret Uzelman of Unity have often shared their love or horses and horse-drawn wagon experience with the community at a variety of in town and countryside events. The duo put an informal call out for fellow teamsters and riders to join them on a short trail ride Saturday afternoon.
The blue skies and warm weather made for a perfect day for 32 participants, which included two wagon-drawn teams and 20 horseback riders. The opportunity to ride along either by wagon or on horseback in a leisurely manner without the interruption of electronics or other sources of noise pollution, with the bright sunshine guiding the way, was among the highlights for a number of those who took part. Both horses and riders seemed to enjoy the gathering as they moseyed along the trail soaking up the warm day and camaraderie along the way.
"The youngest participant was three and the oldest participant was 90-year-old Bill Roadhouse, with a number of generations in between," Margaret Uzelman says.
The ride attracted participants from Neilburg, North Battleford and many from the Unity area. The group travelled over fields and trails in the Adanac area for approximately seven miles, taking around two and a half hours to complete.
Arriving back at the starting point the group enjoyed food and fellowship around a traditional campfire sharing their experience of the day, their enthusiasm for their horses and gratefulness to be part of an event such as this.
"People kept commenting how much they enjoyed such beautiful fall weather, while some riders expressed their thankfulness for an opportunity to enjoy a fun get together with other horse lovers while enjoying the outdoors," said Uzelman.
A few spectators, who were not able to physically participate, drove out to watch the group ride along the trail.
