MACKLIN — Macklin’s Cole Reschny continues to add to his hockey success story. In just this season, played with the Saskatoon Blazers U18AAA team, Cole has had some remarkable accomplishments and stats.
- Won top forward and was named to tournament all-star team at Telus Cup Western Regionals, posting eight points that included four goals and four assists in four games played. His one-timer from the top of the circle in the championship final got the Blazers on the board and on their way to the win.
- He was part of the silver medal win for Team Saskatchewan at Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island.
- Helped his team capture the SMAAAHL provincial championship with the Saskatoon Blazers.
- Will compete at the national Telus Cup in Quebec April 24-30 with the Saskatoon Blazers.
- He was a top scorer for the Blazers putting up 65 points in 34 regular season games, 17 of those points in their run to the provincial championship and another eight points at the Telus Cup West Regionals, including a goal in the final game.
- He was drafted first round of the 2022 WHL bantam draft.
- Cole was called up to play several times with Victoria Royals of the WHL, scoring his first WHL goal in one of those appearances.
- Earned rookie of the year and first-team-all-star for the SMAAAHL.
- Named rookie of the year for the CEHL (Canadian U18 AAA hockey leagues) earning 90 points in 49 games played including regular season and playoffs.
“Telus Cup Regionals was a hard-fought series, and it was an awesome experience to go through with all the guys on my team,” Cole says.
“I think it is always amazing to contribute and score for the team and help the team win. But it is always good to just win.”
Cole said one of the reasons the team came together so well was the realization of what it was going to take to win, and they put it on the line for each other.
“I think the other reason we have had so much success is because of our coaching staff and everything they have done.”
Cole says the support from his family the whole season has been a key to his success as he knows they are always there for him.
Once the Telus Cup concludes, he is planning to take some time off to let his body heal and recuperate before he gets back into the gym.
“I will work in the gym towards getting stronger and faster so I can reach my goal of making the Victoria roster next year.”
“Although I am not travelling to Quebec for TELUS Cup, Cole’s dad, Clinton, will be going along with some other team dads,” says Allison Reschny, Cole’s mom.
When asked about some of her highlights from Cole’s season, Allison responds, “The biggest highlight to me was in the final game of the Western Regionals against Warman. Every time we played this team we knew we were up for a battle and it could be anyone’s game. We have become “hockey family” with a few players on this team over the years as Adair and Mathies were Cole’s teammates through the Brick and some spring hockey and Bursaw was Cole’s teammate last year at NAX. We know what they are capable of and never took these games lightly.”
Allison said the morning of the Telus regional final was concerning as her son woke up with a flu bug and his family was worried he would not make any of the game due to his illness.
“He somehow managed to muster up enough energy to make it to the rink and on the ice for the second period and when he scored that one-timer on his second shift, first goal for our team to tie it up 1-1 and get the momentum rolling for the Blazers it was something I will never forget,” Allison says.
“I think that will rank one of the highest exciting moments of his hockey career for me, I’m still wondering how he made it out on the ice let alone score that goal. He went downhill on energy after that, but the Blazers pulled through in a very tough battle into OT.”
