Downtown Medical Clinic in Unity welcomes three new doctors

The Town of Unity is thankful for resident physicians who chose to undertake some of their residency in the community as it now means new doctors have joined the physician team that work out of Downtown Medical Clinic

UNITY -- Over several weeks in August, Downtown Medical Clinic has welcomed three new doctors.

Dr. Williams says these doctors will also serve surrounding communities of Macklin, Cut Knife and Wilkie, and all of the physicians will be in Unity part of the week. This will mean six physicians serving out of the Downtown Medical Clinic.

“Two of the new doctors, Dr. Choong and Dr. Shah, were residents in Unity for a total of two months over the last two years and they are no longer resident physicians,” Williams explains.

Dr. Lazar started the first week of August while Dr. Shah began on Aug. 15th and Dr. Choong will join the clinic on Aug. 22.

Dr. Kelsey Lazar is originally from Melville and was working in North Battleford for the past four years as a family physician.

“I was born and raised in Saskatchewan and grew up in the Melville area where I completed high school. I followed with my undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree for four years at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. I attended medical school in the Caribbean on the island of Curacao and further completed most of my clinical training in Chicago Illinois for two years,” says Dr. Lazar

“I joined the University of Saskatchewan to come back to my home roots for residency training where I completed my family medicine residency at the North Battleford site from 2016-18. I joined the North Battleford Medical Clinic in 2018 upon graduating from my residency, where I have been working for the last four years.”

She has experience in emergency medicine and addictions and has been involved in further training of residents in North Battleford and at USask.

“I predominantly work in the ER and will continue to work in the ER and addictions in North Battleford in addition to my new clinical practice in Unity.”

Dr. Lazar has relocated to Unity and says she is excited to join the community. Her interests include enjoying the outdoors and staying active as much as possible as she enjoys golfing and the lake in the summer as well as travelling, sunshine and good food.

“I look forward to serving the people of Unity and surrounding area as a physician and to help serve rural Saskatchewan as a generalist family physician. Rural practise is near and dear to my heart as it is where I have grown up, and it is foundational to our province’s health care system,” adds Dr. Lazar.

Dr. Nathan Choong was in residency in Unity one month each year during his second year of residency. He comes from Toronto and studied at medical school in York, U.K.

Dr. Choong enjoys travelling, running and baking as well as playing piano and violin.

Dr. Deena Shah came to Unity from North Battleford where she lived for two years completing her residency in family medicine. She completed her medical school training in Dublin, Ireland at the Royal College of Surgeons. Prior to that, she lived in London, Ont. where she was born and raised.

“We rotated in Unity for one month in both first- and second-year residency and I was drawn to the town,” adds Dr. Shah.

In her free time, she loves reading, hiking and travelling and says if anyone has any good book recommendations, she is all ears.
