UNITY, KERROBERT, LUSELAND — Schools in our communities are doing their part to tackle hunger through their “Scare Hunger” campaigns.
Students and classrooms either collect or canvas the community for donations to be donated to their community’s food bank. The school-wide effort includes staff, student and family support, and of course, the generosity of the home community.
At Kerrobert Composite School, every year the student leadership council run their food bank donation drive with each grade being assigned a specific item to collect so as to send a variety of product to the Kerrobert Food Bank.
KCS asks the KFB what items they are in need of and assign each item on the list to each grade at school. The collection runs the week leading up to Halloween, with delivery following shortly thereafter. The collaborative effort is gratefully received by food bank representatives as it helps replenish their shelves for the upcoming winter.
Luseland School have some students indirectly involved with the community wide “Frightening Food Frenzy.” Donation bags were dropped off at each house in Luseland Oct. 23-24, with volunteers collecting filled bags on Halloween night. Missed or late donations can be left at food bank cart at Luseland Family Foods. There is no fright at night on Halloween in Luseland.
In Unity, the public school holds a school-wide food bank collection to deliver with the UCHS contribution collected on Halloween night.
Unity Composite High School has been taking on the “Scare Hunger” campaign for a decade. That’s 10 years of Halloween night collections wherein UCHS students go around town and knock on doors to collect non-perishable items for the Unity Food Bank. While they know the tradition has become more common knowledge amongst residents, they still do their part in communicating the collection campaign to help aid in their efforts.
The UCHS Halloween collection crew consists of UCHS Positive School Climate Committee, SLC, SADD, Leadership class aided by family and community volunteers.
UCHS also adds a fresh vegetable donation to their food bank contributions as their current vegetable fundraiser includes the option of purchasers to have their choices donated to the food bank. These fresh garden vegetables are a welcome addition to food bank inventory.
