LUSELAND — The town of Luseland had a town hall meeting Nov. 17 at the Luseland Salvador Community Hall. Town council went over some key projects and highlights from 2022 and explained the asset management plan that they had completed by Gold Standard Engineering. The town informed residents they are working on the top recommendations in the plan, which require immediate attention such as the closure of the Luseland Theatre.
While it was not an easy decision to make, the town has taken the advice of our engineer to close the theatre, as there are many public safety and health measures which require us to do so. However, the town is eager to work with the theatre board to keep the projector equipment we have and screen and move it over to the community hall. We will join the boards and hope to have a new show schedule sometime in the new year and operate out of the community hall. Town council feels this will also help keep the hall busy and used more frequently, as rentals decreased significantly through COVID.
November has seen increased activity at the community hall with the annual marketplace that was held on Nov. 19. Many artisans and home-based businesses set up at this event and it kicks off the Christmas shopping season in our community. The Luseland Arts Council hosts this event and has a soup, sandwich and pie lunch at the venue. The day was a great success, and we are happy this annual event continues.
The Luseland Bell Acres Golf Club is once again hosting Bosses’ Night Out at the community hall, an event we are happy to see return after COVID. It took place Dec. 3. It’s a terrific fundraiser for the local golf club and a way to show appreciation to staff and friends during the holiday season.
I would also like to thank Jerry Fischer and Darrell Kraft for the many years of service and dedication they have shown to senior hockey in the town of Luseland. They were both recently honoured on our wall of fame for their 20 years of consecutive service to the Luseland Senior Mallards team. Both men, have been recognized as coaches of the year, both have won the SWHL Harvey Somerville Memorial Award and have done so much for senior hockey and team building in Luseland. It is with sadness that we have recently learned that there will no longer be a senior Mallard team, but we are hopeful that we will see the senior Mallards jerseys once again and that it is only the end of a chapter but not the book for senior hockey in Luseland.
Just a reminder for town citizens as we experienced a great deal of crazy winter weather in November. Please try to park vehicles in driveways, garages or back yards after a winter storm. It is extremely difficult for town staff to clean residential streets properly when there are vehicles preventing them from doing so.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone season’s greetings from the town of Luseland. Town council will be out Dec. 21 around 8 p.m. to do our annual light judging contest. We look forward to seeing everyone’s light displays.
