Cinderella season for Macklin hockey teams

Hockey teams in Macklin scoring a memorable season with three championship banners won so far

MACKLIN ‑ Fans say they aren’t sure when the last time three minor hockey teams were in both league and provincial finals. Adding the senior team that won the SWHL championship has made for an exciting playoff season at the Macklin Communiplex.

The senior Mohawks won the Sask. West Hockey League title, three games to one, over the Wilkie Outlaws, capturing the championship in Wilkie March. 26.

The U18 Mohawks tied their opening game of the provincial final with Redvers by a score of 4-4. The Mohawks were unable to overcome Redvers and had to settle for second in this division in the province. It was an admirable season, as the U18 Mohawks won three provincial playoff series to get to the final series, beating Lashburn, Kerrobert and Meunster to get to the provincial final.

The U15 Mohawks defeated Lafleche/Wood River in game one of their provincial final by a score of 8-4 and would play game two on the road March 27. The U15 team would not be denied and shut out Lafleche by a score of 4-0, capturing the U15 D division provincial championship.

The same U15 team played the Unity Lazers in the Highway 14 league final earning a game one win in Unity March 23 by a score of 7-2, with the second game set for March 29 at home.

The U13 Mohawks captured the provincial D division championship defeating Rouleau Ramblers 6-4 in both games. Hockey Sask. in their social media post about the provincial win, said, “The Macklin Mohawks ran the table in under 13 D going 8-0. The finals were a close affair with Rouleau and Macklin both displaying tremendous skill throughout.”

The U13 team is also in the Highway 14 league final facing the National Outlaws (Biggar-Wilkie) and earned a decided victory in game one with game two set at home March 29.

It has been a dream season for the Macklin Minor Hockey program and its players/coaches.
