UNITY — Cake? Ice cream? Guests? Must’ve been a party! More than that, it was a celebration of the collective memory of Saskatchewan, embodied by the 14 special guests who attended the Century Club Celebration held at New Horizons Hall Oct. 19. That was the number of people over 90 years of age who were able to attend.
New Horizons hopes this will once again be an annual event. In pre-COVID-19 days, New Horizons celebrated club members who were 90+ years of age; now they say they hope to host annually with more members of the community who attain that age.
Guests of honour ranged from farm wives to a Second World War hero. There were sprightly beauties of 91 and a dancer on the cusp of his 100th birthday in February. They shared memories of life on the farm, in the classroom, and of their favourite things, like journeys with their partners, marriage proposals, music and gardening.
After being welcomed by president Byron Trapp, the honourees enjoyed musical entertainment provided by Dianne Skog, were interviewed by Louise Robson and were served cake and ice cream, tea and coffee.
It was a good opportunity to be together with people of many generations, and New Horizons members, family and friends were among the more than 40 people who came to help them celebrate having reached such milestones in their lives.
