With 60 to 70 per cent of area crops harvested, the first snowfall of the year was recorded Sept. 19.
About 20 whooping cranes were spotted in the Muddy Lake area, with Mike Herle – past president of the Unity Wildlife Federation – spotting them feeding on his land. Local naturalist W. E. (Bill) Smith confirmed the identity of the birds. The latest count estimated the total number of whooping cranes in existence to still be well under 100.
From the school board meeting minutes: “That with Indian Enrolments at Cut Knife Schools now exceeding the limit of 145 students set for 1972-73 we instruct our principals to refuse further enrolment of Indian students this fall.”

Senlac hockey player Sheann McWatters returned from a hockey trip of a lifetime. She had played with a Western Canadian Elite team that travelled to the Czech Republic, where they won a bronze medal in the Czech Challenge Cup tournament.
The McLurg High School sand golf team took top spot in all categories at districts. Mark Lorenz won the boys’ event with a score of 76 over 18 holes. Amanda Johnson was the girls’ champion with 89. The team’s combined score was 33 strokes ahead of the second place Dinsmore team.
One hundred and thirty-two people came out to take part in the 22nd annual Terry Fox Marathon of Hope in Wilkie, with the Unity event hosting 66 participants.
