Blast from the Past: Brenda Trout of Saskatoon teaches in Unity

50 years ago

Wilkie Constituency NDP held their nominating convention at the Oddfellows Hall in Unity. Wilkie housewife and mother of two young children, Delaine Scotton won the nomination over Ron Loerzel, a young Handel farmer.

Unity School of Dancing hired Miss Brenda Trout of Saskatoon to teach ballet and jazz. Local senior student Lois Hayward would continue to teach the tap classes.

Luseland Pioneers’ Club held an official opening in the newly renovated Club Rooms.

Playing at the Roxie Theatre in Wilkie was the family movie, Benji.

The Saskatchewan government purchased a portable tire shredder and tested it at the Saskatoon landfill where mountains of discarded tires had piled up since provincial regulations had forbidden burning or burying of used tires.

The final map of the new school division boundaries was released with “Landswest School Division receiving a silver lining” when Kerrobert and Major schools were both included in the new local division. Unity Board of Education chair Pat Uzelman said, “We’re happy we got to keep the Landswest together, but we’re not happy with the amalgamation.”

The mandate of the provincial Education Equity Task Force was to restructure school divisions in Saskatchewan so each would have 5,000 students.

Wilkie CWL hosted an “Evening ‘N Pink” with author and breast cancer survivor Francesca Iosca-Pagnin as guest speaker. Proceeds went to the proposed new Breast Health Centre in Saskatoon, set to open in 2015.

With NHL players locked out, Senlac native Curtis Brown signed with the San Diego Gulls of the ECHL.
