UNITY — A tee-rific fun-raiser doubling as a fundraiser held in Unity took place Sept. 10 as the Unity Miners hosted their annual Fun Day of Golf.
The traditional event takes place the second weekend in September each year and is the main fundraiser for Unity Miners Hockey Club.
UPDATED, UNITY--The 2022 event saw 103 golfers come out to hit the links with their friends, the Woods and the Greens.
Golfers have the opportunity to compete in a number of friendly competitions that could put some extra change in their pocket as they can chip away at a station, putter around on another or try for an ace in the hole. Lunch and supper are also part of the day’s par-tee.
Organizers spent the early morning of Sept. 10 setting up to accommodate participants.
Longtime volunteer, who has been dedicated to the Unity Miners as well as golf club activity, Peter Gartner, is credited for committing many hours of work to help set up for the best experience for the fundraiser as well as those participating. While Brian Woytiuk shies away from acknowledgement, he is also recognized for his efforts in ensuring this event continues. He also participates in the activity.
Forty-seven sponsors and donors are acknowledged on a sign at the entry and are appreciated for helping to contribute to the overall success of the event.
At the end of last season, the Unity Miners put out an urgent call for more people to come on board or risk the club folding due to lack of volunteers. Three mainstay executive members — Brian Woytiuk, Jake Senger and Collette Lacoursiere — indicated at the close of the 2021-22 season it would be their last year at the helm after several years of commitment.
Executives say they hope an excellent turnout for the golf fundraiser will resonate into more bodies joining the ranks of those needed to help with in running the senior hockey club,
At the close of the season in March of 2022, a Miners’ spokesperson said the team has many young, local players in lineup for next season and it would be disappointing if an executive deficit led to the team’s demise.
The Miners say it did not matter if players thought they were bad at golf, they are hoping they would join the club. From the links to the rinks, the success story of Sept. 10 is the start of positive signs for the Unity Miners.
Long-time Unity Miners Executive Member, Brian Woytiuk, affirms there will be a team for the upcoming season as some newcomers have committed to coming on board if last year's trio of executive stayed with the club for another year. A meeting will be held to make a plan going forward and the hockey club is still seeking additional people to look after specific tasks, in whole, to assist with efficient operation of the senior hockey team for their season.
