Mr. Atch Kidd was chosen as Sportsman of the Year at the Macklin sports dinner. During his acceptance speech, Kidd told guest speakers Jim Neilson of the New York Rangers and Dave Balon of the Vancouver Canucks that their “boss,” Clarence Campbell, NHL president, had grown up in Macklin, attending school and playing hockey and baseball.

Judy Lorenz, Reginald Hiebert and Doreen Wandler of Wilkie; Marion Cey and Trudy Greenwald of Scott; and Brenda Bojarski, Patricia Gruber and Theresa Huber of Leipzig were awarded honour pins at the St. George School graduation ceremonies.

The Wilkie arena window project was officially completed with Joe Cey and Wally Lorenz cutting the ribbon. With the town unable to assist due to other expenses looming such as a new ice plant, the $97,000 was entirely raised by volunteers. Volunteers, led by Cey, also did the demolition of the lobby wall.

Unity Composite High School students Adrian Briggs and Amanda Frantik won high jump gold medals at the SHSAA provincial track meet. Briggs also set a new provincial record of 1.75 metres.

Duane Clark and Keith Wilson of Unity each posted personal best times in completing the Red Deer Marathon.
