SASKATOON - The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) Economic Crime Section is alerting the public to a series of fraudulent activity occurring in Saskatoon.
Recently, the SPS has been made aware of a buy and sell phishing scam that is currently targeting residents in Saskatoon.
Residents with ads listed on buy and sell websites are being contacted by fraudsters who claim to be from out of town or are otherwise unable to meet the seller and want to provide a deposit for the item via e-transfer.
The fraudster then sends the seller a link for a fake e-transfer that prompts the seller into inputting their financial details to receive the transfer.
This is a scam! The fraudster will then copy the seller’s account credentials and withdraw funds.
Investigators are reminding community members to be cautious when receiving e-transfers from unknown persons. Always verify web addresses before clicking on links and consider setting up two-factor authentication to protect your accounts.
Did you know? There is a Buy and Sell Exchange Zone located in the west visitor parking lot of the SPS HQ for residents to conduct legal property transactions from online sales.
