A recent decision of North Battleford's city council has, in effect, deprived one local citizen of the ability to use his greatest asset in life.
"Bob," a client of the day program at BTEC, has, for many years, ridden his bike to our waste management area to salvage motors out of machines dumped there. He took them to his group home and usually got them working. Now, because of enforcement of the "no scavenging" by law, he is no longer allowed to take anything out of what has long been called the waste management facility, but is now clearly just a dump.
A few years ago I got compost from the "facility," but that's over. Others I have talked to have had similar stories. One mentioned a neighbour who took out wood and refinished it to make beautiful furniture. Now "waste management" will just have to open more area to handle the refuse- - good or otherwise. Everything in the dump will just stay in the dump.
I talked to Bob yesterday. He signed to ask if I had written a letter to ask for him to be, once again, allowed in the DUMP.
