So, you don't exercise. What's the reason? I assure you I have heard them all. The only people who shouldn't be exercising are those with a physical limitation and their doctor recommends no exercise. If you don't fit into this category, what is your excuse?
Check out my list of the most common excuses I hear:
"I don't have time." If the president of the United States of America has time to work out, I'm sure you can squeeze in half an hour a day. If exercise is a priority in your life, you will make time. Early in the morning, noon hour or instead of sitting on the couch watching TV in the evening. Is there a misconception that if you don't work out for two hours it's not worth it? Thirty to 40 minutes a day is really all you need to see physical benefits. Remember a healthy body equals a healthy mind. Committing to being more physically active will enhance almost all other areas of your life as well.
"I'm too embarrassed to go to the gym." Yes, it's true. In the beginning you probably aren't going to know what you're doing. You won't know how to use any of the machines. But this is why the gym has staff members to help you. Trust me, it won't be easier to break down these barriers later in life when you feel even more insecure. Don't let your fears or insecurities hold you back from becoming the person you are longing to be. And always remember that every person in the gym had a first day at some point.
"I can't afford it." I almost guarantee that you can. Most gyms have specials where a membership costs you less than $1 a day. That's less than a daily coffee. Have a look at your budget. I would bet there is something unhealthy you could replace each month for less than the cost of a gym membership. If it isn't financially possible, look into a home workout program.
"I'm too tired." Believe it or not, exercise gives you energy. Plus it releases endorphins that will make you feel great. You will be less stressed and sleep better, which will have you feeling more rested than ever. All this, plus many, many other benefits, just by exchanging 30 to 40 minutes of your day for exercise.
"I started but I wasn't seeing any results." You didn't wake up one morning carrying around 30 extra pounds. Why do you expect them to disappear overnight? Remember to set realistic goals, get focused and don't give up. Another key is to remember that not all results are visual and the internal rewards are equally as important, if not more, than the external.
Did I miss any? What is your favourite "reason" for not exercising? I would love the opportunity to debunk it as well. If you are sick of excuses, get moving today.
Say it! Mean it! Do it!
