Take voting research beyond social media

My world is constantly changing, but this October seems to have more transitions than normal. It has been busy and stressful.

I have two beautiful new nieces and a handsome new nephew, who have had me running to the hospital. I'm attempting to create a sense of a new normal for my children in our new home and I wasn't ready for the snow to come. I think it is too much like Christmas to have all the white stuff lying around and I am annoyed enough by Christmas decorations and merchandise filling the stores before we even pass by Halloween to be ready for winter.

I don't even like to drive until a few days after the snow arrives. People forget they need to slow down and I've seen more cars in ditches after a mild first snow than during a wicked mid-winter blizzard.

It seems to me I've also endured a storm of election campaign materials in recent weeks. I moved in August, so I don't qualify to vote in any elections this fall, but that doesn't stop the flood of information. Over the years I've voted for people I believed in, against people I didn't and at times was so dismayed by my choices I spoiled my ballot to make a point.

I've been in the running for jobs where so many qualified people applied the interviews were hours long and the employers were able to choose the very best candidates. I've also seen positions stay open for long periods of time because there was no one suitable for the job.

It seems to me it is sometimes easier to win an election and have important responsibilities than to get an entry level or low paying job. Opinions do vary and there are always people who stand passionately behind a candidate who scares me. All around me there are signs posted in the ditches and neighbourhoods, the social media universe picks up every misstep and slip of the tongue and the news covers the rest.

I know whom I would vote for if I was eligible in various locations, but wonder if I would change my mind at all if I was in those areas and had a chance to actually meet the candidates face to face at my doorstep.

Voting is an important responsibility and for me it takes more research than reading a few cartoons on Facebook. Political leaders take on tasks and make decisions affecting us all, we deserve the very best and we should do all we can to make sure we get the very best.
