It seems everyone gets a special day or a week. This week, for example is Fire Prevention Week. It's one of the more important designations, way ahead of Weedless Wednesday, Be Kind to Your Pet Week or even Newsroom Appreciation Day (held one April Fool's Day two years ago).

It is impossible, in a community newspaper, to acknowledge each designation, even though many are equally as important as fire prevention. So we pick and choose, or pass on the message because those promoting their cause make sure we snap a photo of their flag raising ceremony.

This month has a special designation that does rate our attention, however. October is United Way Campaign Month in the Battlefords. Through a series of promotions and canvassing, volunteers will be working hard to raise funds that support a wide array of organizations and initiatives in the community.

The goal of the United Way is to raise sufficient funds so these non-profit organizations can concentrate on their services and programs, rather than where their funding is going to come from.

Last year, over $100,000 was allocated to 11 non-profit organizations in the Battlefords. This was the largest in BUW history. Unfortunately, requests for funding far exceeded the organization's ability to give. They need your support now more than ever.

When you contribute to Battlefords United Way you help agencies such as the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, Battlefords Boys and Girls Club, CNIB, Red Cross, St John Ambulance, Catholic Family Services, Battlefords Branch Mental Health Association, Portage Vocational Society, Battlefords Trade and Education Centre, Midwest Food Resources, and Battlefords Empty Stocking Fund.

Supporting the United Way gives you the opportunity to contribute to the work of a wide range of groups that all contribute to the well being of the community.
