A reader emailed photos last week that show an accumulation of cigarette butts, assorted other trash and bird droppings along a curb in front of a vacant downtown building.
He has also posted his editorial comments on Facebook and received this comment for a North Battleford citizen. "Downtown is disgusting!!! Makes me very very mad that all that s___ and garbage laying around!"
While the street fronts of occupied buildings in the downtown core are well tended by those enterprises, the unoccupied properties are not. And who hasn't driven by the Royal Bank tower on a gusty day and witnessed the mini-cyclones of garbage wafting upwards?
Visiting family, who at that time lived in the heart of Calgary just off of 17th Avenue downtown, I often witnessed individuals whose only job seemed to be to clear the streets of garbage. Maybe it's time the City took a look at adding such a job to their roster. Something as simple as clearing up the trash and bird poop would go a long way to improving downtown's visual appeal.
