I hear it every day. The guy who does 300 crunches to flatten his stomach. A woman who wants me to show her exercises to get rid of excess fat on her buttocks and thighs. The answer to any question about spot reduction of fat is the same - you must reduce your overall body fat to lose fat in a particular area. Unfortunately spot reduction of fat is impossible, so stop trying to lose belly fat by killing yourself with crunches!
Remember that a muscle does not "own" the fat that surrounds it. In addition, fat will never turn into muscle. Fat and muscle are two completely separate types of tissue and they will not transform no matter how many squats, lunges or crunches you do. If you stop exercising, muscle will shrink and fat deposits will grow causing a more flabby or soft appearance.
Now, this does not mean you should stop doing crunches or exercises for your inner thighs. These muscles are still important for increasing metabolism and having a symmetrically toned and fit body. Just remember that you are simply strengthening the muscles underneath the fat. It is important to incorporate a complete exercise plan including resistance and cardiovascular training as well as following a healthy eating plan. This will help you reduce fat throughout your entire body.
Many things play a role in your body's way of losing fat. They can include genetics, sex, age and other factors. Also, fat tends to disappear in the reverse order in which it appeared. First to come is usually last to go.
When you think of the last person you know who lost a substantial amount of weight, where was the first place you noticed it? Probably their face right? Remember this when you think of spot reduction. They probably didn't do a bunch of jaw exercises to rid themselves of that extra chin! Get out there and exercise for overall fat loss and better health!
Say it! Mean it! Do it!
