Partners for Rural Family Support has requested the city's aid with hopes to solve the very basic need of homes for the increasing number of homeless people. Rental property, houses and apartments are seriously lacking, as are practical and affordable houses for the majority of the average and low-income brackets, which make up the majority of labourers. The common good of all suffers grievously. While it is not the city's business to build houses, it is the city's responsibility to ensure suitable and sensible, practical and economical means and ways to meet the needs of its growing population. Recognizing the problem is simply not enough. That many inquiries from developers are being made only serves to reveal the reality of this shortage. Mayor Eaton said, "Someone needs to come up with a proposal around the development of rental property." He admits to receiving inquiries from developers. Surely, amongst all these, there are one or two with their feet on solid ground, willing and able to build affordable, practical houses to be purchased by families in need, and rental properties. Temporary shelter, while needed at times, is simply that - for the time being, providing no stability. Transient workers and searchers will come and go, and hopefully they will leave with a good impression of our city, and its people, or decide to stay and grow with us, providing homes are available and affordable. Here is hoping the problem can be solve economically, with common sense and practicality.
