Dear Editor
The Battleford's Humane Society made the decision to close its impound area Sept 9 due to a number of dogs infected with parvo being present in this area. This is a very contagious disease and spreads readily. It is present in the Battlefords community as a whole and is not specific to the Humane Society. More than 30 cases have been diagnosed in the area between Aug. 1 and Sept. 15. As a result animals come into the shelter already infected with the disease.?
At the time the decision was made to close the impound area and the City of North Battleford's bylaw officials were made aware of this. They were also informed that any animals picked up by bylaw staff would be housed at another location while the impound area was closed. We have not and will not euthanize any impounded animals during this period.
We have been forced to turn away rural animals and owners who wish to surrender their animals from our facility at this time. We apologize for this inconvenience. There has been no issue with the disease in the animals we have available to adopt.
