This letter is in reference to "Sculpting a super symposium" (Regional Optimist, May 13.
As the president of Prairie Sculptors' Association (PSA), I was interested in reading Tara Scaglione's article on the symposium planned for Chapel Gallery this August. Scaglione based much of the story on an interview with Marcus Miller, the new director of galleries. Being relatively new to the city, Miller seemed to be unaware of the contribution that PSA has made to the biannual symposia held at the gallery since 2005.
In 2005, 2007, and 2009, the symposium was organized by our association and hosted by Chapel Gallery. We were fortunate to have been funded for artists' materials for those three years. In addition, money was available to purchase large public sculptures. In all, nine pieces were purchased with contributions made by the allied arts council, the City of North Battleford, and SaskPower. Six of the sculptures remain near the gallery, while three are in other locations in the city.
Due to a change in the focus of the event planned for this summer, our organization is not able to participate. We are grateful for the support we have had from the community of North Battleford. We are proud of the works our members have produced, and believe that Prairie Sculptors' Association has left a lasting legacy to the culture of North Battleford.
