Operation Student Safety, an enforcement blitz co-ordinated by SGI and law enforcement, pulled over a whopping 293 drivers Sept. 4 and 5 for speeding in school zones.
That statistic certainly seems to show drivers have a reckless disregard for the safety of our school kids. Shame on us.
I've always considered myself something of a school zone saint, that is until North Battleford's change of the school zone speed to 30 from 40 km/h beginning with this school year.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but is difficult to drive around the city without coming across a school zone. Almost any route I map out to get to the gym, an exercise class or to a pharmacy for painkillers after all that activity, involves a school zone.
In my travels around North Battleford, I rarely exceed 40 km/h, except on Railway Avenue, 101st Street and other major thoroughfares. To be honest, most of the side streets are just too rough for higher speeds.
So, I never really had any trouble adhering to the school zone limits, until now. More than once I've travelled a familiar route, and found myself forgetting to drop my speed to 30. With a rush of shame, I've tapped the brakes and been lucky enough not to have been caught in the act.
I now know I have to be more vigilant in watching for the school zone signs, and judging from the fines that piled up last week, I'm not the only one.
