Spring is fast approaching. That means marathon season is upon us once again.
If you have been considering entering a marathon this year, preparation is key. If this is the first time you have entered, you may be considering running a 10 kilometre race rather than a full marathon. This is a great decision and a great place to start.
You should plan to start training for a 10 kilometre run eight weeks prior to the race. You should be generally in good health with no major health concerns. If you have any concerns it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor prior to starting a training plan.
One of the most important things to remember during training is that you must train at your own pace. Finding a partner to train with is a great idea and can be motivating. Just remember to find a partner who is at a similar training level to yours. There is nothing more discouraging then struggling to keep up with a highly experienced runner if you are just beginning.
Remember running is challenging. Don?t expect to be able to run long distances on your first day. You may even begin by using a walking/jogging combination. If you are really interested in registering for a race but are nervous about your ability to run the entire thing, most races will allow you to register as a walker.
Most training programs use a combination of running, cross training, strength training, stretching and rest days. These training programs are designed to help you gradually progress to being able to run the full 10 kilometre race. It is important to find a training plan that will work for you and that you can commit to. Missing elements of the training plan can severely impact your ability to complete the race.
