Random acts of kindness could be a revolution

Scouts Canada has come up with a promotion to complement the pink wave that hit the Battlefords last week.

Instead of promoting an anti-bullying message, aimed not so much at converting bullies as at empowering victims, Good Turn Week invites everyone to experience the power of kindness.

Their message is, "one good turn can make someone's day. Imagine what 100,000 good turns could do!"

Scouts Canada has designated April 14-22 as Good Turn Week and is calling on all Canadians to step up and join them by doing a "good turn" for a friend, family member, neighbour or the community.

The possibilities for embracing this week are endless. Let your imagination run wild. Buy a co-worker flowers (hint, hint, newsroom guys), treat a friend to lunch, buy doughnuts for coffee time, stop in for tea with an elderly friend or neighbour Experience how good you can make yourself and those around you feel.

" We invite Canadians to emulate Scouting's virtues and make the effort to deliver a simple act of kindness," said Dylan Reinhart, national youth commissioner and chair of the National Youth Network of Scouts Canada.

During the week Scouts Canada members will be out in the community doing "good turns."

And each good deed is designed to foster another. After bestowing an act of kindness, the Scouts will pass along a "good turn" bracelet and encourage their "victims" to pay it forward, creating a cycle of goodwill that will spread throughout communities across Canada.

So, if you are fortunate to become the recipient of a good turn, bracelet or no, be sure to find a way to pass on the positive vibe to someone in your world.

Canadians can share their "good turn" on the Scouts Canada website by texting "Good Turn" with a description of their good deed to 51051 or submitting it via scouts.ca/gtw. Or you can tell us about your exploits: [email protected].

Don't wait for Saturday, start practicing random acts of kindness today. It could be habit forming. Let's hope so.
