Dear Editor,
I was appalled to read in this week's paper our city councillors have voted in favour of gifting $5,000 toward the down payment on a condo for residents who qualify (Housing down payment grant causes fireworks" News-Optimist Oct. 21).
This gift will ultimately come from all city residents' pockets. As my husband and I are both retired and living on a fixed income we can't afford to keep having our taxes increase. I do see the need to have more affordable housing and could possibly support a loan, but not an outright gift.
In the same edition, the council was shocked to see the cost of the new treatment plant was going up. I think it would be more prudent to be worrying about our infrastructure instead of giving money away
Perhaps this is one descion that the residents of North Battleford should demand be revisited. My pockets are not very deep are yours?
