PAPHR policy causes hardship

Dear Editor

Oct. 5, Prince Albert Parkland Health Region denied a request to have blood transfusions performed at the Spiritwood Health Complex.

The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region also ruled that no transfusions will be done in long term facilities in rural areas that are more than 30 minutes from the nearest hospital.

An 87-year-old woman's family has been advocating for blood transfusions at the facility. She has to travel 90 minutes to Prince Albert, the transfusion is approximately six hours in length then return to Spiritwood - a day of nearly 10 hours. Her mobility has limitations and finds the day difficult and draining. She requires blood transfusions every six to seven weeks.

Spiritwood has primary health care and medical clinic services with three doctors and three nurse practitioners five days per week, two of which are certified in advanced cardio life support.

The public has to get involved and contact the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, the Ministry of Health in Regina and our politicians to reverse their decision for the elder people in this health region.
