On May 10, I attended the Provincial Drama Festival. Although it is wonderful to see so many young people participate, I have serious concerns regarding this particular event.
One high school categorized their drama as a "warning: mature content" category. Seated next to me were two young boys, aged 11 and 12, with other younger children in the audience. In my opinion, a "mature content" category is inappropriate for any school production. In this particular drama, the four actors at the end of the play standing on stage stripping down to their undergarments, together with the profanity used throughout the drama, left me with an extremely negative image of this high school. I believe we dress, conduct ourselves and speak based on the image we wish to project. The image I was left with for this high school was very negative.
What has happened to our educational system to be teaching our youth that it is okay to strip and use profane language to represent themselves and their school? Are we no longer capable of discerning what is acceptable and have become immune to what is right and what is wrong? This is not the case in all schools and does not apply to all the schools in this particular event.
If this and future similar demonstrations are presented on YouTube and become viral, can you imagine how many young people will be negatively impacted by this unacceptable display? Positive role models are essential for our children.
Parents please get involved in what is being taught, and teachers, students need guidance.
