Lack of respect could have been tragic

Dear Editor

During the Jan. 17 snowstorm, I saw many acts of kindness from my living room window, such as drivers offering rides to people trying to walk through that deep snow. I also experienced the kindness of neighbours shovelling snow. However, sometime after midnight a person took the liberty of using my yard as a shortcut by entering the back alley gate, walking out the front gate and leaving both gates wide open. Both gates have very visible "dog in yard" signs.

I can possibly forgive the trespassing, but not this thoughtless act. My dog is a little one from the shelter and doesn't know her way around the outside world yet. She wouldn't think twice about running out the gate.

Fortunately, I always look outside to check the weather, so I saw the gate open before letting her out. She could have been lost or injured.

That back gate is usually locked at night, but I didn't want to walk through the deep snow that night. Lesson learned!

If you don't live there, you shouldn't be there, day or night. Show a little respect.
