Happy 2013

Well, the hype of the season is past and the reality of another year faces us. After typing and deleting a dozen or so sentences exhorting myself and you, my readers, to look back over 2012, I eliminated them all. While looking back may bring great insights, 2013 beckons us to move forward.

Here, then, are some of my commitments for 2013: cultivate a short memory, develop a crazy attitude toward giving, maintain strong fences and don't give up or in.

First let me explain about the short memory bit. Of course I wasn't referring to the age-related variety because that just happens. I propose the cultivation of an attitude of forgiving injustices done and moving on to new opportunities trumps crippling attitudes of bitterness or despair every time. While it is sorely tempting to get dragged down by things that happen to us, overcoming them is a powerful stimulant.

Next on the list is an adjustment in the way we give. I'm not advocating the reckless tossing of gelt onto the streets, rather the suggestion that we become generous in encouraging others and diligent in finding ways to support those organizations who serve with integrity.

And yes, there may be times when we're also called upon to open up the wallet to individuals or families who have no way of repaying us. Just once I'll look back and testify that the joy of shared blessings far outweighs the numbers in a ledger.

The "fences" part is all about refusing to let others violate our personal boundaries. It's taken me far too many decades to learn that but, at any age, it's applicable.

For me, not giving in or up is based on my Heavenly Father's unfailing love, strength and bounteous mercy.

"We give thanks to You, oh God, we give thanks!"

Happy 2013!
