Happy Family Day, whatever that means. In the newspaper world it means the bah humbug types (mainly the editor and the circulation manager) lament the good old days when we could go all the way from New Year's Day to Easter without having to endure a "short week."
Sigh, those days are gone. So, in the spirit of embracing "long weekends" along with the rest of the working world, I will be spending time with family on the weekend. As I make the long but familiar journey to the southwest corner where I grew up, I will contemplate my roots and the role a strong, loving family has had in my life.
Not all kids growing up were as fortunate as I. Here's hoping all families find a way to make Family Day a special one for their loved ones.
