Assisted living quest continues

Dear Editor This a report of the last six months' activity from the steering committee seeking enhanced living for seniors in the Battlefords and area.

Dear Editor

This a report of the last six months' activity from the steering committee seeking enhanced living for seniors in the Battlefords and area. This committee was established in November at an open meeting where volunteers indicated their interest in serving on it. Committee meetings were held in the board room at Third Avenue United Church. We appreciate this generosity, as we have no budget.

The January meeting was a time to get acquainted ad discuss our goals.

In February the manager of the North Battleford Housing Authority was our guest. Mr. Reynoldson explained the parameters of the housing authority.

The next meeting held March 2 was a luncheon meeting where we had a discussion with MLA Len Taylor. Later in March a second meeting was held at which Councillor Ron Crush and realtor Herb Cox were in attendance. A sub-committee was formed to draft a position paper on the need for affordable, enhanced living facilities in the Battlefords. This paper was presented at a Saskatchewan Housing hearing held in North Battleford.

In April reports were presented by members who visited facilities in Maidstone and Lloydminster.

Members also visited Bethany Manor in Saskatoon and shared, at the May meeting, what they saw and the advice and encouragement they received. Glenn Hornick was able to meet with us later in May. He explained to us the nature of the private care home that is presently under construction in Fairview Heights.

At the June meeting we discussed the direction the committee may take in the fall. A committee of three was appointed to encourage new members who could assist in attaining our goals.

It wasn't all work and no play. An afternoon of music was held in the Pioneer Hall, which generated a petty cash fund for stamps and other costs. We appreciate all those who have supported us.
