4-H trip a disappointment to supporters

Dear Editor

I am writing in reference to "4-Hers experience historic moment at NFR" (Regional Optimist, Feb. 3).

I was a member of the 4-H system for approximately 18 years. I do not recall ever taking trips that were not related to the 4-H projects that I was involved in.

I was totally appalled to learn that the 4-H club and leaders would approve of this trip. I have been on this trip and know what the cost of this type of trip would be. Is this what the fundraising that the local communities support is going to? What did going to the rodeo have to do with learning anything about leadership, horsemanship and community service? Spending the money of the community that supports clubs in this fashion is awful. How about supporting your home town and province? Bring in local trainers, hold clinics, attend the local sponsored events such as the Trainer's Challenge that is taking place in our province in the month of Februrary.

I know I purchased tickets and products from previous members of this club because I believed in the 4-H cause. It angers me that my money sent these people to Las Vegas and will seriously rethink supporting 4-H groups in the future if this is considered the norm.
