His eyes were open and I knew he was receptive. I found a book called "An Apple a Day", a gift from his 1979-1980 class at St. Joseph's School. What a fitting gift - Dad was well known for his apples. I found a quote which really struck me - it read 'Every man's work is a portrait of himself'. This was him - this was about Dad. He didn't talk about everything he did, he showed us who he was by all he did. This was his portrait. William John Kachur was born December 31, 1924 in the Elfros area; the youngest of four children of John and Anna Kaczur. In 1943 Dad attended Normal School and began his teaching career at Clarkson School, with a class of forty seven students from Grade One to Ten. The next year was no easier at Halicz School with fifty two students from Grade One to Nine. In 1947, he made the move to Uhrynow School near Krydor, and this is where he met my mother. He was attending church service, and being new to the community, was invited to dinner by my uncle Morris Lasiuk, and introduced to Jean. Needless to say, visits to the Lasiuk's became more frequent and Mom and Dad were married in 1949. That is how a marriage that lasted almost 62 years began. This is the heart of Dad's portrait. After several moves, the family settled in Reward where Dad was Principal for 8 years. They were good years among good people. In 1968, we made the move to North Battleford. Dad taught at St. John's and then at St. Joseph's until his retirement in 1980. Retirement allowed him opportunity to pursue his interest in horticulture, continuing the work of the Lasiuk family in growing the Lasiuk apple. His apples, plums, raspberries and cherries won him many ribbons, awards and championships. This added joy and satisfaction to Dad's portrait. A man of deep faith, Dad volunteered for the church - he was treasurer, errand runner - if there was a need and Dad could fill it - he did . the faith dimension of his portrait. And in his 'spare' time, Dad became more involved with the Knights of Columbus. He held an official position as Faithful Navigator, but also filled many other roles - there were tickets to be sold, groceries to purchased, money to be counted, endless meetings, and then there were the bingos ! His involvement with the Knights went on for 29 years, almost as long as his teaching career. Above all, Dad valued family. Every Christmas, every grandchild's birthday, every anniversary was spent together. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for family - especially the grandchildren. We knew that, and love him deeply for it. This is the love filled part of his portrait. Husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, Brother Knight, faithful follower of Christ your roles are fulfilled, your work is done, your portrait is so beautifully finished. Thank you for the time you gave us. Thank you for the love you gave us. Go and be now fully in God's love. 'Every man's work is a portrait of himself' - Amen, Dad. Card of Thanks Words seem inadequate, but the family of William Kachur would like to thank our family and friends for their love, support and kindness, and Dad's 'family' at Villa Pascal for the compassion and countless ways dad's life was made better, and our lives were touched by your exceptional care - Bless you ! We are grateful to all who took the time to visit Dad at the Villa. Our heartfelt thanks to Fr. Mykhaylo Fedoriv and Fr. Andrei Kachur; Cantor and Choir of All Saints Ukrainian Catholic Church; Knights for Columbus for the Honor Guard and tributes; the Pallbearers; Bob McKay and Battlefords Funeral Service; CWL for preparing the lunch; Rosaline Bidyk and helpers for the dinner and to all who attended the Prayer & Funeral services.
