DEVERDENNE: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marcel Robert Deverdenne, late of Edmonton and formerly of North Battleford, SK on December 5, 2011 at the age of 90 years. Marcel was born February 18, 1921 at Redu, Belgium. His family immigrated to Canada in June, 1928. Marcel was 7 years of age at that time. He has an older brother, Paul, and a younger sister, Rose. Both siblings are still with us. When the family arrived in Canada, they settled in a small community of Iffley, SK where they farmed. Marcel's father, Leon died October 7, 1943 and his mother, Marie Therese died in 1967. Marcel married Emma Vandenberghe on October 12, 1948. Marcel and Emma farmed for a couple years and then he attended Mechanical School in Winnipeg. He worked as a certified auto mechanic and parts sales person until the age of 52. He enjoyed curling, golfing and doing mechanical work on stock cars (racing). When he left mechanical work he became the greens-keeper for the North Battleford Golf & Country Club during the summer months and worked at the Curling Club & Agriplex Skating Rink as an ice maker during the winter months until he retired. Marcel & Emma enjoyed trips to Europe in 1977 and 1981. They enjoyed meeting relatives back in "the old country". Marcel was always proud of his family. Their home was always full of family and friends, enjoying singing around the piano and nightly games of cards. There was always lots of laughter, especially during the summer months when Marcel would sneak up on unsuspecting "victims" and douse them with the water hose! Marcel enjoyed 50 years with Knights of Columbus. A highlight of his life was achieving a "hole-in-one" at the North Battleford Golf & Country Club. Over the years he built a boat with a cousin as well as building a prototype skidoo with his brother in law. He spent many winter evenings curling and winning numerous prizes. Previous to Marcel moving to Edmonton in 2005 he spent much time doing woodworking. He built several oak dining tables -enough for all his children! He enjoyed raiding the raspberry patch and pea patch. He took joy growing large tomatoes. Marcel's last years were spent in Edmonton beginning with Legion Montgomery and then moving on to St. Thomas Health Centre and lastly to Â鶹´«Ã½AV Terrace Continuing Care Centre, where the staff felt he was a joy to care for a man of few words and always smiling. We will miss you, Dad. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Leon (Irene): Brent, Cheryl (Greg); Gerard (Helene): Alain, Oriana (Daniel), Milene (Travis), Philippe, Chantelle (Thierry); Maria : Heather (David), Jonathan (Rhonda), Josh (Shannon); Andre (Lori): Lindsay (Maureen), Janette (Mark), Luc; Maurice (Mon): Mik, Joy; Lawrence; Monica (Walter): Jesse, Conrad; Michele (Ed): Amber, Roger; Nicolle (Kevin): Nicholas, Holly, Jarrod; Marc (Dana): Brendan, Morgan, Keaton, Jordyn; 12 great grandchildren.
