History
Dad was born in Spedden, Alberta on Dec. 16, 1921, the 5th child of Harasym and Olga Booy, both of which immigrated from the Ukraine. Dad came from a family of 8, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Louis, Bill, Nellie, Harry, Polly, Kay, Mike. He was 5 years old when the family moved to the Marlin District (12 miles south of Glaslyn). He attended Marlin School and completed grade 8. He remained at home to help operate the farm as his older brothers had joined the army. Dad also worked for his cousin Bill Pilat in Glaslyn, where he met Annie Hawryliw, whom he married on Jan. 23, 1947. In the spring of 1947 the family (Olga, Mike and Dad and Mom) moved to Bruce, Alberta to farm. Their first crop was totally hailed out. Mike moved to Edmonton, Dad and Mom moved back to Glaslyn on a farm about 6 miles west of Glaslyn. There Jerry was born in 1948 and Gloria in 1950. Times were tough and in 1954 they decided to leave the farm and move to Edmonton and look for work (probably because he had a brother and two sisters there). He found employment at Sherrit Gordon Mines in Fort Saskatchewan where he worked for six and a half years. Marianne was born there in 1958. His heart was always in farming, when the Hawryliw homestead came up for sale, Dad and Mom decided to buy it and moved back to Glaslyn in 1961. Here he famed and worked for Bill Pilat and later for Ed Dart. In the late ‘60s, son Jerry joined him in the farm operation and worked together until the late 80’s. Dad and Mom moved to Glaslyn in 1976 but he still actively farmed from there. When grandsons, Murray and Darcy began to farm, Dad stepped back, but still eager to help until about 2010. Dad was very active in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church where he Cantored for over 45 years and many with the present Very Reverend Father Taras Udod. After his retirement he enjoyed golfing and bowling, quite often you would find his name on the high score board at the bowlarena. He had a passion for wood working, and in about 1990 decided to build grandfather clocks. Just from a picture he turned a rough piece of wood into a work of art. He built 13 grandfather clocks for his children and grandchildren, which will be cherished for generations. Dad really enjoyed seeing his great-grandchildren even in his last days he would brighten up when they came to visit. Unfortunately he did not get to hold three of the youngest because they live a ling distance away and his mobility was failing. In July of 2014 Dad and Mom moved into an assisted living facility in North Battleford and settled very nicely. Dad left us on Nov. 10, 2014 just one day short of the 68th anniversary of his Dad’s passing. DAD – We will always be proud of what you accomplished as a Father, as a Farmer and as a Craftsman. We will forever be thankful for the morals, ethics and guidance you gave us to help make us what we are today. We will forever miss you, but we will be together again someday in a BETTER PLACE.Ìý
